Reddit can be a tough egg to crack. The site's user-submitted content often spirals into inside jokes that only the veteran users may understand. But sometimes the crumb trail is left for newbies to find.
Case in point: /r/wheredidthesodago.
The sidebar description of "Where did the soda go" states: "This is a subreddit for ads taken out of context in animated images."
Still confused? We can help. Scroll down to learn more about one of the best niche subreddits around.
It all started with a post to /r/funny three years ago, showing an exaggerated spill in an infomercial. One redditor said "I would subscribe to a subreddit created for taking infomercials out of context."
Another Redditor obliged, and /r/wheredidthesodago was born. The rules were simple: "Only post unusual GIFs from REAL ADS with no context. The funnier the better!"
The subreddit now has over 370,000 subscribers. And the captions are getting more creative. "Tragically, he forgot the floor was lava:"
The post titles make up purposes for products. "Wear two glasses to appreciate that your daughter has now become a focused young man."
Often the gif titles are written as first-person takes on the scenario. For example, "I can't be seen hanging around these weirdos."
This post said: "That ONE time you tried to poison your dad, and he never trusts you again."
Other captions speak as an omniscient narrator. "After a long day of work Lisa was ready for a night of slaying."
Each post takes the silly, exaggerated scenes and puts a twist on them. "The new jewelry box anti-theft system exceeded all expectations."
There's a dark side to many posts, and many captions are borderline NSFW. "Barbara made it clear to Frank what she would do to him if he was ever caught cheating."
This induction pan technology taken out of context is a classic. "Denise didn't realize her new cookware was going to be literally 1/2 off."
Cutting bread with a doorstop? "With all of her other knives broken, Sharon had no choice."
One commenter called this the best post of 2014. "Richie wouldn't let his blindness stop him from following his dreams of becoming a graffiti artist."
With a never-ending stream of new infomercials, /r/wheredidthesodago seems here to stay. More gems like "recently-left-Amish-community world problems" are inevitable.
